What Brake Fluid Does and Why It Wears Out

Brake fluid is hydraulic. When you press the pedal, the master cylinder pressurizes the fluid and that pressure travels down the lines to squeeze the pads against the rotors. For that to work, the fluid has to stay incompressible. Liquids do not compress. Vapor does.

Here is the problem. Standard brake fluid is glycol based, and glycol is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls water out of the air. It does this continuously, through microscopic pores in the rubber hoses and past the seals, whether the car is being driven or sitting in a parking lot. Typical DOT 3 fluid absorbs roughly one to two percent moisture per year. That water dramatically lowers the boiling point of the fluid. A DOT 3 fluid at around three percent moisture can lose about a quarter of its boiling point.

Once the boiling point drops far enough, hard braking that generates real heat -- coming down a grade, riding the pedal in stop and go traffic, hauling a load -- can cause the water in the fluid to flash to vapor right at the caliper. Vapor compresses. That is when the pedal goes to the floor and nothing happens. Moisture also corrodes the inside of the system, and that corrosion attacks the most expensive parts in it: the ABS module, the master cylinder, and the calipers.

DOT 3 and DOT 4: Which One Your Vehicle Takes

Look at the cap on the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. It will be stamped with the DOT rating your vehicle requires. We service both.

DOT 3 is the common specification for everyday domestic and Asian market vehicles. It has a minimum dry boiling point of 401 degrees F and a minimum wet boiling point of 284 degrees F.

DOT 4 adds borate esters to the glycol ether base, which raises both numbers: a minimum dry boiling point of 446 degrees F and a minimum wet boiling point of 311 degrees F. Most European vehicles, most modern performance vehicles, and a growing number of mainstream cars specify DOT 4 from the factory.

There is a wrinkle worth knowing. DOT 4 handles heat better, but it also tends to absorb moisture a little faster in service, which means DOT 4 systems generally want a shorter exchange interval, not a longer one. And DOT 5 is a completely different animal: it is silicone based, it does not mix with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1, and it does not belong in a standard ABS system. If your car did not leave the factory with DOT 5, it should never go in. We use what the manufacturer specifies.

Signs Your Brake Fluid Is Overdue

The most reliable indicator is not a symptom, it is a look at the reservoir. Fresh fluid is clear with a light golden or amber tint. Fluid that looks like weak tea is aging. Fluid the color of coffee or cola is long overdue, and dark fluid with visible sediment means corrosion is already happening inside the system.

Symptoms that show up on the road include a brake pedal that feels soft or spongy, a pedal that travels farther than it used to before the brakes bite, brakes that feel fine cold but go vague after a few hard stops, and ABS engaging at odd moments during normal stops. That last one has other causes too, which is why we test rather than guess.

How Often Brake Fluid Should Be Exchanged

For most vehicles, every two to three years is the right baseline, regardless of mileage. This is a time based service, not a mileage based one, because the fluid absorbs moisture whether you drive or not. A car that only sees ten thousand miles a year is not on a longer schedule than a commuter, it is on the same one.

Check your owner's manual first, because some manufacturers, particularly European ones, specify two years flat. Vehicles that tow, run mountain grades, or see track use should be on a tighter schedule. And if the vehicle sat for a couple of years without being driven, the fluid did not sit still: it kept absorbing water the entire time. What a Full Exchange Involves
