5 Signs Your Brakes Need Replacing
Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Knowing when they need attention can prevent accidents and save you money on more expensive repairs down the road. Here are five warning signs that it is time to have your brakes inspected.
1. Squealing or Squeaking Sounds
Most brake pads have built-in wear indicators, small metal tabs that contact the rotor when the pad material wears thin. This creates a high-pitched squealing sound designed to alert you that replacement is needed soon. If you hear this sound when braking, your pads likely have about 20% of their life remaining.
Not all squealing means your brakes are worn, though. Morning moisture, dust, or new brake pads can cause temporary noise. The key difference is persistence. If the noise happens consistently during braking, it is time for an inspection.
2. Grinding or Metal-on-Metal Noise
Grinding is more serious than squealing. It means the brake pad material has worn completely through and the metal backing plate is contacting the rotor directly. This damages the rotor surface and significantly reduces your stopping ability. If you hear grinding, schedule a brake repair as soon as possible. Continuing to drive on grinding brakes turns a pad replacement into a much more expensive pad and rotor replacement.
3. Vibration or Pulsation When Braking
If your brake pedal or steering wheel vibrates when you apply the brakes, your rotors may be warped or have uneven thickness. This happens from heat buildup during aggressive braking or from leaving the car parked with hot brakes. Warped rotors reduce braking effectiveness and make the pedal feel inconsistent. Depending on the severity, rotors can sometimes be resurfaced, but often they need replacement.
4. Longer Stopping Distances
If your car takes longer to stop than it used to, or you find yourself pressing the brake pedal harder than normal, your brake system needs attention. This could indicate worn pads, air in the brake lines, a failing brake booster, or low brake fluid. Any of these conditions reduce your ability to stop safely and should be addressed promptly.
This symptom can develop gradually, making it harder to notice. Pay attention to how your car responds during routine stops and in comparison to how it felt when the brakes were new.
5. Brake Warning Light
Modern vehicles have dashboard warning lights for the brake system. A brake warning light can indicate low brake fluid, worn pads (on vehicles with electronic wear sensors), ABS system issues, or a parking brake that is not fully released. Never ignore a brake warning light. Even if the brakes still seem to work normally, the light is telling you that something in the system needs attention.
If your brake light comes on along with the ABS light, the issue may be with the anti-lock braking system, which is important for maintaining control during emergency stops.
What to Do If You Notice These Signs
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, do not wait. Brake problems get worse over time and more expensive to fix. A diagnostic inspection can identify the exact issue, and in most cases, brake repairs can be completed at your location the same day.
